Country Pursuits

There are plenty of opportunities for cycling, walking and hill climbing around The Pigsty. Explore woodlands, field margins, loch side, or summit a munro. Here’s a small sample of some local walks and cycling trails:

  • Lady Mary’s Walk, Crieff. A circular trail covering 10.5km along the banks of the River Earn.
  • The Knock – a popular walk and mountain biking hot spot up a small steep hill rising above the town, from the Crieff Hydro Resort.
  • Turleum – a forestry track in woodland surroundings.
  • Loch Turret – enjoyable walking and cycling routes with stunning views.
  • Ben Chonzie is our closest munro with a relatively easy track to the summit. You can also enjoy climbing Ben Vorlich and Stùc a’ Chròin, a pair of munros on the south side of Loch Earn, visible from The Pigsty.
  • Adventurous mountain bikers will enjoy specialist venues like Comrie Croft and the Glencoe Mountain Resort outside the ski season.
  • Enjoy Scotland’s great outdoors, on foot Walk Highlands

As your hosts at The Pigsty we can suggest a multitude of routes and challenges for you to enjoy on foot or in the saddle around Perthshire – the county carved by glaciers and shaped by rivers.

Sporting Experiences

For those inclined to be active, or try out something new, take advantage of all the great local facilities for fun and fitness. Here’s a taste of what’s available near The Pigsty:

  • Golf – a game born in Scotland, where you’ll find some of the world’s best courses. Bring your clubs because you’re spoilt for choice in our area, from the famous Gleneagles just six miles away, to the likes of Blair Atholl, Mains of Taymouth, St Fillans, Comrie, Crieff, Muthill, Dunkeld and Pitlochry golf clubs.
  • Activity Centres in Perthshire offer a host of adventures. Crieff Hydro Hotel have a riding centre, 4X4 and quad-biking trails, and a high ropes course. Or head for Croft Na Caber at Taymouth Marina and get out on the water in a anything from a pedalo or kayak to a catamaran or inflatable.
  • Fishing is another great Scottish past-time and there’s plenty to catch on all the lochs and rivers, like Kinkell Fishing with its two mile long beat for salmon and sea trout, or on Loch Earn at Drummond Fish Farms.
  • Visit Perth races.  Perth racecourse offers around 13 fixtures per season (April to September).
  • Crieff Highland gathering.  A full programme of traditional Highland games competitions on offer including Running, Youth Running, Cycling, Highland Dancing. Held in August.

For the Culture Vultures

Sightseeing, historic sites, museums, theatres, and exciting annual events – Perthshire has them all in abundance. If you can tear yourself away from your comfortable cabin at The Pigsty here are some of the treasures you can explore:

  • About four miles from The Pigsty is Innerpeffray Library – believed to be one of the oldest lending libraries in the world which still contains books, alongside the medieval St Mary’s Chapel, both built on a Roman road.
  • Stroll over to St David’s village to view the Ardunie Roman watch tower – one of many Roman signal forts along the Gask Ridge dating from when this was Roman frontier country.
  • Enjoy fantastic outings to some of Scotland’s famous castles, all within easy reach of The Pigsty, including Scone Palace, Stirling Castle, Doune Castle, Glamis Castle and Drummond Castle.
  • Head for Perth or Pitlochry to soak up the arts – the Horsecross Centre (concert hall and theatre, and the Perth Museum & Art Gallery are well worth a visit, as is the Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
  • Annual events not to be missed include the Perth Show (first weekend in August), The Scottish Game Fair at Scone Palace (last weekend in June), Blair Castle Horse Trials (end of August), and the spectacular Scottish Cycling Youth Tour in early April.
  • Experience Glenturret Distillery, Crieff, Scotland’s oldest working malt whisky Distillery.
  • Drummond Castle Gardens are some of Scotland’s most important formal gardens, among the finest in Europe.
  • Visit Beatrix Potter exhibition, museum, garden in Birnam.
